New technology speeds inspections during the busy summer travel season
DUBAI – Passengers travelling through Dubai's airports this summer can expect faster customs processing as authorities deploy advanced inspection systems to manage one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
Around 3 million passengers are expected to pass through Dubai Airports during the first half of July, prompting Dubai Customs to activate a comprehensive readiness plan designed to speed up inspections while maintaining security.

The authority has also reminded travellers to familiarise themselves with customs rules before flying, including the duty-free allowance for gifts and other personal items.
Fast screening
One of the biggest improvements is the speed of baggage inspection. According to Dubai Customs, luggage now takes only seven seconds to pass through its advanced screening process. The authority currently operates 19 state-of-the-art baggage screening systems alongside 77 detection and inspection systems across Dubai Airports, helping officials process large passenger volumes more efficiently during the summer holiday rush.

The latest preparations also include dedicated animal inspection rooms at Terminals 1, 2 and 3. These fully equipped veterinary facilities are intended to streamline inspections for pets and other animals entering the UAE, reducing waiting times while ensuring customs and health requirements are met.
Gift allowance
Travellers bringing presents into Dubai should pay close attention to the customs exemption rules. Dubai Customs allows passengers to bring gifts valued at up to Dh3,000 without paying customs duty, provided the goods comply with the applicable customs regulations and are intended for personal rather than commercial use.
The official Passenger Customs Guide also outlines other duty-free allowances. Eligible travellers may bring up to 400 cigarettes, 50 cigars or 500 grams of tobacco, while alcohol is limited to four litres or two cartons of beer, subject to the prescribed conditions. Personal belongings accompanying passengers are generally exempt from customs duty if they meet the required exemption criteria.
Before you fly
Dubai Customs advises passengers to review its official Traveller Guide before departure to understand which items are permitted, restricted or prohibited, along with declaration requirements. Travellers carrying gifts above the Dh3,000 limit, commercial goods, large amounts of cash or regulated items should make the appropriate customs declaration. Passengers can also use the iDeclare service to submit declarations electronically, helping reduce waiting times on arrival while ensuring compliance with UAE customs regulations.
